About Athletic Labs

Your AI-powered assistant for navigating anti-doping regulations and supplement safety.

What is Athletic Labs?

Athletic Labs is an educational tool designed to help athletes, coaches, and sports professionals understand banned substances and anti-doping regulations. Our AI chatbot provides instant guidance on supplement safety, substance status, and sport-specific rules.

We maintain a comprehensive database based on the WADA 2026 Prohibited List, covering all substance categories (S0-S9), prohibited methods (M1-M3), and sport-specific substances (P1).

Understanding the WADA Prohibited List

Prohibited at All Times

S0-S5: Anabolic agents, peptide hormones, beta-2 agonists, hormone modulators, diuretics, and masking agents. These are banned both in and out of competition.

Prohibited In-Competition

S6-S9: Stimulants, narcotics, cannabinoids, and glucocorticoids. These are only prohibited during competition periods.

Sport-Specific

P1: Beta-blockers are prohibited in certain sports like archery, shooting, and golf where they provide an unfair advantage.

Supplement Contamination Risk

Even supplements that claim to be "clean" or "natural" can be contaminated with banned substances. Studies have shown that up to 20% of supplements contain undeclared ingredients that could result in a positive doping test.

High-Risk Categories

  • Pre-workout supplements (often contain undeclared stimulants)
  • Fat burners and weight loss products
  • Muscle builders and "legal steroid alternatives"
  • Products with proprietary blends (hide exact ingredients)
  • Sexual enhancement supplements

Safer Alternatives

Look for supplements certified by third-party testing programs:

  • NSF Certified for Sport
  • Informed Sport
  • BSCG Certified Drug Free
Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs)

A Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) allows an athlete to use a prohibited substance or method if they have a legitimate medical condition that requires it.

TUE Requirements

  • The prohibited substance is necessary to treat an acute or chronic medical condition
  • Use would produce no additional performance enhancement beyond returning to normal health
  • There is no reasonable therapeutic alternative
  • The medical condition is not a consequence of prior prohibited substance use

Athletes must apply for a TUE before using the prohibited substance, except in emergency situations. Contact your sport's anti-doping organization for the application process.

Strict Liability Principle

Under anti-doping rules, athletes are strictly liable for any prohibited substance found in their system, regardless of how it got there.

This means that even if you unknowingly consumed a contaminated supplement or were given medication without your knowledge, you are still responsible for the positive test result. Ignorance is not a defense.

Always verify every substance you consume, and when in doubt, don't take it.
